my dell 1420 laptop have the same issue on ubuntu 8.10 , all alsamixer section is maxed and unmuted. sounds works fine, but microphone didn't work totally. so little and soft sounds captured by gnome-sound-recorder,and skype even couldn't capture any sounds.
