I've been searching around for a number of days through forums and such. I eventually got the sound to work by removing the pulseaudio package. The only annoyance was that I had tried to switch alsamixer to work with my Audigy2 card instead of pulseaudio previously. Either it wasn't listening to my commands, or I had no idea what I was doing (I imagine it was the latter). Anyway, thanks for your support, and I hope the issue was simply my ignorance.
