This problem (which also affects my Inspiron 1100) was not present when I installed the 8.04 KDE4 remix but when I upgraded to Kubuntu 8.10 (and it's also in Ubuntu too).
The problem seems to be with xorg and perhaps the xserver-xorg-video- intel driver.
