I'm also getting noise when muted (popping/static), but this goes away when the volume is at anything other than zero. Interestingly in alsa volume control muting "PCM" in the vloume control produces the static noise, muting "master" produces no sound (as you would expect from mute). This is on a dell d620 laptop.
