OK. Now I purged xorg-driver-fglrx and reinstalled fglrx-kernel-source and linux-restricted-modules-2.6.27-generic and deleted the old kernel entirely and now fglrx WORKS!!!!
But, while playing video in combination with compiz effects turned on, video flickers badly.
