I have same config (dell D630 with ubuntu 8.10 x86_64) and i have same probleme. May be 1 or 2 differences : - i work with 2 screens ( not in clone mode, but in wide mode ). - I should add this line "SKIP_CHECKS=yes" in my /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager file to have right to switch to Normal or High mode
