The bug seems to be fixed in Ubuntu 8.10. Whether I unmount using the desktop icon, the "places" panel plugin or the shell command, it works. Thank you.
Nevertheless, two ideas on how to improve launchpad: 1. Launchpad could provide a howto on how to file a bug report. Information as for example my ubuntu version or whatever else was missing could have been included in the first run. Maybe I've just missed it, fact is that I did not find any help on filing a bug report and noone pointed it out to me. 2. DebuggingRemovableDevices relies heavily on users with the Gnome desktop.
