I've been experiencing the same problem (8.10, 3 screens with Xinerama, nvidia 177.80).
I can also confirm that I get the same problem with or without focus- follows-mouse. Usually I get out of it by logging out (Ctrl-Alt-Del, then Alt-L to log out). I've tried killing naultilus and metacity to no avail.
