If .bash_profile is no longer useful for environment variables while using GDM then perhaps the default .bash_profile in /etc/skel/ should be changed and a .profile should be added. I have attached a file with an example .profile and .bash_profile. Having good comments in .profile and .bash_profile will save people a lot of time. This scheme works with the new dash shell. (sourcing ~/.bashrc from ~/.profile do not because GDM uses dash to source ~/.profile)
