So far linux-image 2.6.27-8 (amd64) is working fine. @Robb Topolski: I used envyng to install the nvidia driver and it is working fine with this kernel. There's the envyng-qt version if you want the GUI or envyng -t (ie text mode) if you run from the kernel. I tried the qt version, rebooted, and it hadn't worked (I got the lowres warning); so I ran envyng -t from a console (ie via ctrl-alt-f2), installed the driver, rebooted, and hey presto, it all worked.
