Wrong turn... The boot delay came back, so I changed /e/n/interfaces back to auto eht0.
That is, the error message on /etc/init.d/networking stop or restart is still "Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0" Switching off the router circumvents the problem, but it seems, just because of a broken process: I once saw an error message like "signal xy caught", when I switched off the router and (which happens occasionally at that point) the Ubuntu "shutdown progress bar" disappears to show the text output.
