I have the same problem on a Gateway MX6028 (same video card).

Some more details:
- Video runs fine if nothing else happens on the screen;
- As soon as I e.g. change the volume (press volume +/-, which is a shortcut to
kmix), switch to Firefox or Thunderbird, etc., the segfault is generated and
ttys are not available anymore.

After the segfault, X tries to restart and it generates a new segfault
every time. The only way to stop it is to press ctrl-alt-del and reboot
(in other words, the keyboard seems to be still answering).

This problem appeared after my upgrade to 8.10 (kubuntu). Before this, I
was running KDE4 on 8.04.

I produced this problem on an upgraded partition and on a newly
formatted partition.
