I had to do the following: sudo chmod -x /etc/kernel/postinst.d/nvidia-common sudo apt-get remove nvidia-common
This completes the installation of the custom kernel. However, the /etc/kernel/postinst.d/nvidia-common is still there. So, I, reinstalled it and then purged: sudo apt-get install nvidia-common sudo apt-get purge nvidia-common After that, the file is gone.
