I took this stuff from a live-session, is that OK?

I just scrolled through Xorg.0.log, not really knowing what I was doing, but
maybe it has to do with the output connector of the graphics-board. The display
is actuall detected correctly, the right modelines are stated, but xorg doesn't
seem to realize that the detected values are valid for output 2.
Since my display only has one simple vga input, I can only hook it to output 2
of the graphics board.

The only change I did to Xorg.conf was adding
Option "metamodes" "1440x900_60 +0+0; 1440x900 +0+0; nvidia-auto-select
+0+0"
to the "screen" section, wich was actually added by nvidia-settings.
