To circumlocute:

When you open a message with a large attachment, it requires a long
delay and it appears that Thunderbird downloads the entire message
including attachment, even if the attachment is not actually being
rendered to screen (eg a file attachment of some sort).

Then, when the file attachment is double-clicked, Thunderbird then opens
a 'Downloads' dialog and again starts to download the attachment.

Not clear if this is a limitation of IMAP or something silly that
Thunderbird is doing with caching or something like that. But it's very
annoying when your IMAP provider only permits something like 50 kB or
less as the download rate, or worse, if you are on a low bandwidth line,
because reading the text part of the message still requires the whole
message download (i.e. you might as well be using POP3!)
