I forgot to mention that the same thing happens without the patch, if mplayer is used with the Video Overlay port, i.e.
mplayer -vo xv:port=84 foo.avi where port 84 is the "Adaptor #1: "Intel(R) Video Overlay"" port. Also, this happens regardless of whether or not compiz is activated.
