I have performed a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop. I also have a
NVidia CK804 with ALC850. I am using the SP/DIF After the
installation, I had no sound.

I followed your advice and killed PulseAudio by performing the following
in a terminal window:

"ps -ef | grep pulseaudio"
"kill <PID>", where <PID> is the process id of pulse audio shown in the
previous command.

I assume that "sudo /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop" will work, but have not
tried it.

I then had to open alsamixer and unmute the IEC958 and ensure the
IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA volume level was set to 0.

I now have sound. Everytime I reboot, I have to kill PulseAudio. Does
anyone know how to get PulseAudio working? or should i just prevent it
from starting up?
