I can also confirm this bug in ubuntu 8.10. with kernel 2.6.27-7. Just use something like pico, gedit or eclipse to modify a file. It fails i guess using this save safe method of saving files, but I can edit files directly in the shell without problems. Unfortunately it is a fresh 8.10 install so i can't switch to an old kernel easily.
