Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

"Log Reader" 2.5.2 plugin parsers QIP's log with ~10000 messages about
3-4 minutes (pidgin freezed for all that time)

strace output gives me the following:

stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2057, ...}) = 0

Definitely there should be a way to optimize the code - now the plugin
is useless.
