I seem to be having the same or at least quite similar problem (don't
know enough about ubuntu to be sure):

After updating to 8.10 my desktop computer has started having irregular
kernel panics (caps lock & scroll lock flashing, requiring hard boot)
almost every day. Most of the time either Firefox or Transmission has
been running before the crash. (But then again most of the time one of
them is running even when the system stays up.)

There also seems to be general unstability using the Intrepid - programs
such as Rythmbox, Amarok, Firefox crash regularly.

My was system was quite stable before when using 8.04 and still is with
Windows XP.

I'd be happy to provide additional information but I'm not sure what is
relevant for this.
