I'm seeing this, too. It seems quite new -- was there a recent update of some font library in ubuntu?
Fresh .wine and fresh wine from git don't help. Also, with visual effects on in the ubuntu desktop, lots of stuff is all f*cked up. Even the title bar for xterm looks awful when you mouse over the minimize/maximize buttons. And text doesn't appear *at all* in wine with that setting.
