I would volunteer to fix this in edgy if someone could point me in the
right direction. I'm a developer but I have minimal experience with os-
level hacking on linux. I can fiddle with initrd images but I don't know
what was missed / broken to cause this bug.

Anyone care to give me a few clues so that I can work on a fix that
works with edgy?  I think it's pretty lousy to leave the "production"
distro broken since the fix is available and the distributed
documentation indicates that usb install is working.
