I have this same problem. Firefox and Xorg start to thrash when I hit some web pages. This same behaviour also occurs in Galeon, but not in Opera or Konqueror.

It is especially bad when I load a page that has flash or other video. I don't even have to play the video, just accessing the page will cause xorg and firefox to consume at least one full core of cpu time. leaving the page(s) or closing them doesn't always clear the cpu overload. Sometimes I have to kill firefox externally. one example page is www.dailykos.com.
