Public bug reported:

Fiesy on this platform was fine, but under Intrepid only 640x480 and
800x600 screen resolutions offered despite 1024x768 being native.

xrandr refuses to allow a new mode definition:-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --newmode "1024x768" 63.50 1024 1072 1176 1328 768
771 775 798 -hsync +vsync
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --addmode default 1024x768
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --output default --mode 1024x768
xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

Adding:-
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection

to xorg.conf makes no difference.

In short there seems to be no way to get the correct screen resolution
