I decided to upgrade this computer to Intrepid as I've done for all my other computers, and I noticed that the upgrade procedure mentions new nvidia 177 packages are going to be installed. This would coincide with my other computers, so I think this may be the best way to fix the problem. I'll come back after the upgrade, and report whether this fixes the problem.
