With a fully up-to-date Intrepid, the unmounting no longer kills the
system. However, it's still buggy. When I carry out the exact same steps
as above and try to unmount I get

$ umount ~/Desktop/nullinfinity
umount: /home/jbr/Desktop/nullinfinity mount disagrees with the fstab
