It's an Intel chip (X4500). I'm pretty sure it's the kernel, although I might be wrong. I'm basing this on the fact that the relevant controls are found under /sys/class/backlight/asus-laptop, i.e. a directory the asus-laptop module creates.
[minutes later] You might be right, there are some asus backlight patches in the 2.4.3 release. It's a bug fix release, so I wonder why it's not already in intrepid-updates.
