Oliver, Actually the jockey nVidia installer that is in the main repository now has already been fixed, and you can get it from there. It works, I checked a couple of times.
Problem is, when you've just installed Ubuntu 8.10 it already contains a buggy jockey installer. So my workaround is as follows: - install Ubuntu 8.10. - go to Applications --> Add/Remove and uninstall (uncheck) the Hardware Drivers component. - reboot and install it again.
