For what it's worth (maybe not much). I had that missing number issue (see Trip's 9/4/08). That was an improvement from the slowness. Prior to 8.10 upgrade, Google Earth was fast, not jerky, all characters, overlays, etc. gorgeous. (oh, system Dell Latitude D610, integrated Intel 915GM, 1GB).
I removed everything I could (see next) related to mesa, and the characters came back! Google Earth is still slow, though not terribly slow. Sorry for the lack of detail, but there are two mesas. One has X11 in the package name, one has GL. I tried removing both, but one (the X11 if I remember) wanted to remove about a gazillion other things, so I just got rid of the GL one. If I went the opposite way (remove X11, leave GL) Google Earth wouldn't run. I tried to be methodical, but soon went mad, figuring at worst I would have to start from scratch. I have a working, though somewhat crippled, machine.
