That suggests your flash drive is setup to be a live system. Do you really want 
that?
I guess that causes in /etc/initramfs-tools/update-initramfs.conf to be set to 
"no" (please verify that). 

If that's true, it is a bug in the kernel package's postinst script: If
creating an initrd.img is disabled creating a symlink to it should be
disabled, too.
