Public bug reported:

While running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex on my laptop I've been
experiencing random crashes and freezes while I have powernowd (version
1.0-1ubuntu2) and the visual effects (compiz version 1:0.7.8ubuntu4.1)
enabled. The system will be completely unresponsive, I can no longer
move the cursor and keyboard inputs are ineffective. The only fix is a
hard reboot. This appears to be completely random, sometimes it happens
right after boot up, sometimes 10 minutes after boot up, but it
inevitably does happen. If I either remove the powernowd package or
disable the desktop effects the system seems to run stable. The laptop
is an older Dell Inspiron 8200 with a Pentium 4 2 GHz processor, 1GB of
RAM, GeForce 2 Go 64MB video card. I've installed the nVidia proprietary
video drivers. I have downloaded all the latest updates.

** Affects: powernowd (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
