I couldn't reproduce the bug since installing the debug packages. I may have updated some libraries at the time (I'm on feisty, so there's quite a lot of changes), but nothing comes to my mind.
One real difference that comes to my mind is that I have clicked the "submit bug report" button in apport. Possibly the crash didn't repeat - it could be the same file being brought to my attention many times.
