Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic
A relative newbie, I was in the process of installing 73 new updates to
my Ubuntu 8.10 using Update manager - Installing software - Applying
changes -Configuring linux-image-2.6.27-9 when a Debconf asked "What
would you like to do about menu.lst?" I had previously been using my
own custom menu.lst and didn't want to lose my custom changes there so
I chose "Start a new shell to examine the situation". At that point
the Debconf greyed out and hung. No new shell appeared and I could not
proceed. After an approx 10 minute wait, a "not responding" option
appeared and I could see no option but to force quit. From Update
manager's details terminal, I noticed Configuring linux-image was not
proceeding, and I didn't know how to get it to resume. I used the
update manager's details terminal to check the contents of /boot and
boot/grub and found the new -9-generic kernel was there but this did not
give me any clue how to make the Configuring linux-image-2.6.27-9
process proceed. Not sure exactly what I did then, but think I tried
the command 'EXIT'. Anyway, soon after that a crash was detected and
I was invited to allow the system to generate a bug report and submit it
here, which I'm trying to do now. Hopefully that bug report is
still automatically attached here, but it's possible it got lost when
had to go through launchpad's registration process to get a password.
In that case I would need some guidance on how to recover and submit it
here. Hope this helps.
