Try removing "splash" from your kernel command line in grub (hit esc then "e" 
to edit before boot). I did this and it fixed my issue reported here: 
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/301628 although there is 
no graphical splash screen now.
At least the notebook shuts down now.

If it works for you, this and the above bug could be marked as
duplicates.
