Try removing "splash" from your kernel command line in grub (hit esc then "e" to edit before boot). I did this and it fixed my issue reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/301628 although there is no graphical splash screen now. At least the notebook shuts down now.
