Sorry I'm not sure about the pulseaudio update because I just set it to do
all the auto updates recomended after installing from the alternate download
CD.
The settings changes which seemed to sort it for five minits were
system/preferences/sound, and I thought it may have been
set for another sound card than my Toshiba equium has--?
I rebooted into the old XP to make sure it wasn't an electronic hardware
problem(it sounded a bit lke dying capacitors); all the sound worked OK
there.
I installed the Eee Ubuntu and the sound was OK there.am
re- installed the 8.10 and it was still the same Dr Who soundscape.
I've re-re-instaled from the USB start disc I made after the first
install-everything is fine now.-!???

Steve.
