Hi all, I had one of the problems mentioned here (slow remote login via XDMCP with X/Cygwin, white rectangle in the upper left of the screen, the warning message
"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The last error message was: Activation of org.gnome.SettingsDaemon timed out GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in." then no menus...). After trying several ideas from here and there, I finally solved it, after removing all IPv6 references from my local (ubuntu) hosts file *and* disabling completely the windows firewall (unblocking XCygwin seems not enough). Now it logins fast and everything works perfect.
