Yes, sliding is quite irritating. Surprisingly, the cube is (at least for me) easier on the eyes than the "classic switch", and with /apps/compiz/plugins/rotate/screen0/options/snap_top on and the (not well described) function to switch the image it becomes quite useful as a presentation software.
The cube also fixes several other bugs/underfeaturisms, such as ctrl+alt+(left|right) window moving.
