Don't know if this is still an issue, but I had the same problem, and found the following : Gnome, (and probably kde as well) mounted the cam directly as an mass storage device. So by the time GTkam or gphoto2 got to the point of mounting it, it was already in use. After unmounting de cam in filemanager, it worked fine in GTkam.
