Public bug reported: Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 I can no longer load an X session, although it seems like I can log in:
After startup, at the drumbeat chimes announcing the login screen, the screen is completely blank. However, I can type in my username/password in order and get the login music with a blank screen, so it seems like the desktop itself is working. And I can log into a virtual terminal and get full access to my system. I'm using a Radeon HD 2400 graphics card, it seems like there are lots of similar problems for people with nvidia cards (e.g. when I run startx from a term i get exactly the same error message as message #11 here [ http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=964649&page=2 ] (except with a different username).
