This is an older bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/35741 but seems to indicate that nvidia drivers interfere with mesa. One of the posters corrected the problem by removing xorg-driver-fglrx and fglrx-control. These packages are not installed on my Dell, and I have GE working fine. You might give it a shot.
