Thanks much!  It seems to have worked.  But upon reboot Ubuntu tried to do a
"Routine check of drives..." and during that, at 28%, the machine hung, hard.
No response from keyboard (or mouse) at all.  This behavior is consistent,
happens every time.  I also tried to boot in Recovery mode, and the same thing
happened, at the same place (28%).

In Recovery mode at least a trace displayed some information before it hung
completely.  The last lines of the trace showed:

[   61.595508] [<ffffff(then 8 more hex digits)>] ?start.secondary+0x97/0xc2

      ---[end trace (16 digit hex)]---

My hunch is I've got a bad sector (or more) or something similar on my boot
drive.  If so, is there an Ubuntu utility that will mark it/them bad so
that Ubuntu won't try to use it/them?

What would you recommend I do?

Thanks much in advance.

Dan

Hi,
Can you try with
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
commands?
If it fails, please post the resulting log.

Thanks.
