Well, the action on this bug report wasn't exactly overwhelming ...

In the meantime I discovered how I can get the modem to work by brute
force, but someone more competent than me needs to change this into
something presentable! It seems to be solely an issue of file
permissions.

what I did: changed those files/directories to mode 777:

 /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
 /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
 /etc/ppp/peers/
 /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial
 /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial-pipe

after the change, this is what it looks like :

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 96 2008-12-19 22:21 chap-secrets
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1754 2008-10-16 03:50 ip-down
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1892 2008-10-16 03:50 ip-up
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 784 2008-10-16 03:50 ipv6-down
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 922 2008-10-16 03:50 ipv6-up
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13486 2008-10-16 03:50 options
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 1644 2008-12-19 22:21 pap-secrets
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 137 2008-10-16 03:50 pppoe_on_boot
-rw-r--r-- 1 root ulli 50 2008-12-19 22:21 resolv.conf

peers:
-rw-r----- 1 root dip 1093 2008-10-30 00:06 provider
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 2008-05-19 11:55 wvdial
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 75 2008-05-19 11:55 wvdial-pipe

please, do make this properly!

uname -a :
Linux extensa5220 2.6.27-10-generic #1 SMP Fri Nov 21 12:00:22 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

modem:
USB modem: Zoom 56k USB Modem, series 1063, model 3095, from Zoom Technologies
Inc, ~$35
The modem is quite small - about the size of a very small mouse - so for those
travelling into and/or living in the DSL diaspora, this is a nice piece of
hardware.
