I've noticed a similar problem with 8.10. This hasn't happed in prior versions (back to 6.10).
I'm running a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop with an nVidia graphics card. The problem (no keyboard response, but mouse OK and CTL-ALT-Backspace will restart X) is fairly reproducible when running on battery and adjust brightness via the keyboard "Fn" key and up/down arrow.
