The issue can be solved at least by adding some sound volume control on
the GDM screen. It is not required to be bound to sound volume
controlling buttons/sliders/etc. on a laptop itself. (Never the less,
such a binding would be appreciated :) )

For now I just always check the sound volume before switching off my
laptop.

P.S. That's become a very annoying issue to many of the laptop users.
And even for those who used to boot up their desktops in the middle of
the night at their sleeping rooms. :) (not every one have detachable
speakers)
