well, all this works when the desktop manager is working as expected  -
which more often than not, it doesnt. I have added xfdesktop in the auto
start applications, but still it doesn't work,

there is no wallpaper display, I have to add it everytime - explicitly.
Sometimes the background is blue, icons come up after the display is set to 
allow xfce to manage desktop

Once the desktop and icons are visible - everything else works as
normal.
