I'm also experiencing this. Pidgin freezes on me when I open a new IM window or sometimes it won't freeze until I send an IM. Disabling the sounds (Tools -> Preferences -> Method -> No sounds) fixes the issue.
Running Ubuntu Intrepid x64 with an X-FI XtremeMusic soundcard.
