Sorry for the lateness of this response.

Confirmed that the removal of the video card got past the reported
problem. Switched back to on-board video and was able to get further
toward live session.

So it now gets to login screen, then screen goes black and spinning wait
cursor stays up several minutes, then just stops. However, now the mouse
pointer still moves so it is obviously not slammed to a halt.

I consider the reported problem solved, so I will probably not pursue
this next issue as the machine has moved from primary use to secondary
use status.

If someone thinks it useful to test something on this platform, let me
know. Otherwise it is relegated to Windows only status in our house.
