As you note, this has indeed been fixed. There's no record of it in the changelog, but it appears to have been fixed by the Debian maintainer (or upstream?) sometime between 5.8.8-1 and 5.9.1-2.
I agree with your gripe about bug triage practices, and often point the same thing out myself.
