When I had in /boot/grub/menu.lst for kernel resume=/dev/hda5 (where hda5 is my swap partition) usplash segfaults like described above - when it is trying to access swap partition for resume: usplash[1104]: segfault at b768d580 ip b7ef6bb6 sp bf862e40 error 6 in libusplash.so.0[b7ed2000+28000]
Removing resume kernel parameter helped.
