I've studied similar problem with a lot of 8710W users and in the end it
poured down to DSDT tables which had something odd going on: when temps
reached a certain trip point the fan started blasting but after that the
tables are updated and it's practically impossible to reach again a
temperature that would trip a lower level of fan speed.

See here (8710w): http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=253102
